OmniPeace “Stamp Out Violence Against Women and Girls of The Congo” Event

Celebrities and spectators alike came out to support OmniPeace’s Stamp Out Violence Against Women and Girls of the Congo campaign hosted by founder Mary Fanaro and friends Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Sheryl Crow. The event was spectacular and motivating, raising awareness of the ongoing horrors inflicted on innocent women and children living in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as a result of war over conflict minerals. (Please go to raisehopeforcongo.org).

The Stamp Out Violence Against Women and Girls of the Congo campaign is OmniPeace's spotlight charity campaign this year in collaboration with another amazing organization, Art of Humanity. Set inside the OmniPeace logo is a collage of images drawn by children in the Congo, depicting their first hand experiences with violence. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from the sale of the Congo t-shirts will be donated to UNICEF and V-day Foundation to build the City of Joy, a leadership and healing center and safe community for Congolese women and girls who have been victims of brutal rape and violence. One of the greatest parts of the campaign is the hang tags on the shirts that are doubling as call-to-action post cards addressed to President Obama. It’s simple; all anyone has to do is pull the hang tag off the shirt, sign their name, put a stamp on it, and drop it in the mail.

Speeches were given by OmniPeace founder, Mary Fanaro, and Jimmie Briggs, an acclaimed journalist who told a very poignant story of his journey into the Congo. The room was solemn as Briggs described his interactions with the Congolese citizens, especially when he spoke of the rape victims. He said passionately, “I’m tired, frustrated, and angry of hearing people talk about the Congo as if there is nothing they can do and that's just not true. We saw unnecessary things going on that we could have prevented.”

Rape is a tool of war in the Congo and will remain so unless we do something about it! The Stamp Out Violence Against Women and Girls of the Congo campaign will unite us in raising our voices in support of innocent Congolese women and children. Please join OmniPeace's Stamp Out Violence Against Women and Girls of the Congo campaign by clicking on this link and sending a postcard to President Obama, urging making him aware of the devastating and tragic situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Hannah Sachs, daughter of Jeff Sachs, Featured in Time Teen

The following article was published in a recent issue of Time Teen, read the full article here.

The Fight for a Better Life

Hannah Sachs, 12, has visited some of the Millennium Villages. Her father, Jeffrey Sachs, is helping the villages meet their goals. When she first visited Sauri (sah-ooh-ree), Kenya, the hospital was overcrowded. "There were three kids to a bed," she says. "There was no doctor, no running water or electricity."

Hannah met farmers whose crops were withering. They could not afford the food and water needed to help plants grow. She also met children who weren't able to go to school. Some didn't go because their parents couldn't pay the fees. Others had to work. Those who were in school had trouble paying attention. There was no midday meal. But Hannah says she could tell "that the students wanted to learn."

Four years later, Hannah sees that Sauri's leaders have found solutions. The hospital has running water, electricity and free medicine. Crops are growing now that the farmers have what they need. Kids go to school for free. "Sauri's progress shows us that winning the fight against poverty" is possible, Hannah says.

OmniPeace at V-Day Luncheon!

FROM V-DAY:

V-Day's 3rd Annual Los Angeles Luncheon, held last Friday February 13th, at the Four Seasons Hotel, in Beverly Hills was an incredible success.

The testimony, performance pieces and speeches by Eve Ensler and Dr Mukwege moved us all to have a deeper understanding of the crisis in the Congo and spurred so many of you to action and support.  We wanted to thank all of you for joining us and for your ongoing support of V-Day and our work around the world. Together we will change the world through the story of women turning pain to power.

Check out more pictures from the event here.

We'd like to take this opportunity to once again thank our hosts Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Sherry Lansing, Paula Wagner and V-Day Board members Carole Black, Ilene Chaiken, Rosario Dawson, Linda Pope, and Kerry Washington.  We were thrilled to have Maria Shriver attend the event and join the afternoon's program.

The tour has resulted in many victories.  As a result of a meeting between Eve and Dr Mukwege with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York prior to LA, the Secretary General is traveling to the DRC on his trip to Africa next week to visit with Dr Mukwege at Panzi Hospital in Bukavu.

The event in Los Angeles garnered much national and international press with these stories as well as many others:
